WHAT AM I LOVING WHEN I LOVE GOD
As said so often, God does not exist. God is existence.
“God,” says Fr. Richard Rohr, “is the name, the word, we give to reality.”
So what am I loving when I love God?
Jesus cries out “Father” from the cross, not as a male being suspended in the cosmos but the patir / abba that is the “supreme deity who is responsible for the origin and care of all that exists.” The source and caregiver of all that exists, in other words: sheer and utter goodness. God is love in fullness.
When I love God, I am loving goodness.
When I love God, I am loving relentless patience. I am loving primordial and ceaseless kindness. I am loving the beautiful void that holds no envy. I am loving the space between that does not boast, and is not proud. I am loving the overwhelming silence that does not dishonor others. I am loving the most beautiful absence that is not self-seeking. I am loving an infinite pool of peace and at-one-ness. I am loving the way reality it is not volatile. I am loving a forgiveness that not only repairs the breach but keeps no record of it. I am loving a celebration of awareness. I am loving a mutuality that endlessly protects, trusts, and is completely indomitable. I am loving the way that this sheer goodness never fails.
And, I am moved to deep gratitude when I sense the way this goodness cares for all that exists, including me, in ways that I cannot fully comprehend.
Worship is simply living a life swept up in goodness.
I believe that is what I love when I love God.
