RELIGION IS KNOWN FROM THE INSIDE

All of us have the capacity to critique. Humanity possesses an inherent desire to belong. When we encounter something unfamiliar, especially in regard to groups, it can trigger anxiety. To alleviate this, the ego may resort to criticism. Clashing archetypes, the fear of the unknown, and the innate need for security, are all wired within us by this fundamental need to belong. Criticism can disquiet our insecurities.

To critique a religion, or religious group is a common practice. Much of this can be good, and necessary. But when we critique a religion or a group, these words from Simone can be of service:

“The hierarchy of religions is a very difficult thing to discern, nearly impossible, perhaps completely impossible. For a religion is known from the inside. Catholics say this of Catholicism, but is it true of every religion. Religion is a form of nourishment. It is difficult to appreciate just through a look the flavor and dietary value of a food that one has never eaten.”
